Self expression becomes hard when the throat chakra is blocked. Having this chakra blocked can also mean that we don't deal with our true thoughts and feelings - as a way of avoiding expression with others.

if you have an energy blockage in the throat chakra - blue lace agate is the stone you need. It is generally known as the best gemstone for unlocking or un-congesting energy in this area. Agates are grounding gemstones also, and when we feel grounded in ourselves we are in a state of ease and our energy flows more freely.

The colour of the stone often relates to its qualities - if the colour is a soft one then so are the energies it creates. A soothing gemstone that can help with self expression. In situations where communication stops and anger grows, blue lace agate is a calming influence.

The Spiritual Meanings Behind Different Gemstones

The Spiritual Meanings Behind Different Gemstones

Turquoise (blue color): One of the main stones that the Dine' (Navajo) use in their jewelry work and in religious ceremonies. It promotes healing and good luck.

Hematite (metallic grey color): Energizes and revitalizes you. It attunes the mind and positively effects the bloodstream.

Jasper (brownish-red color): Nurturing, protects against negativity; promotes healing to kidneys, liver, spleen and bladder.

Malachite (dark green color): Clarifies emotions, facilitates insights. It removes obstruction, represents fidelity and loyalty.

Aventurine (light green color): Releases anxiety and fear, boosts tranquility, promotes decisiveness and leadership skills.

Amethyst: (purple color): Conducts peaceful energy, aids intuition, encourages freedom from addictions.

Rhodonite: (rose peppered with blacks and browns): Rhodonite is said to help regain mental stability, promote positive thinking and help overcome difficulties. The black in Rhodonite contrasts sharply with the Rose coloring to create an intensity of richness.

"Ancient Legends of Gems and Jewels"

Hematite: As far back as ancient Egypt, Hematite was used to reduce inflammation and treat hysteria. In his NATURALIS HISTORIA, the Roman writer Pliny cites Hematite as a powerful talisman that could obtain a favorable response to petitions when the wearer appeared before the king. The stone also procured the positive outcome of lawsuits and judgments. In modern folklore, Hematite is considered a grounding stone, helping to maintain the proper balance of mind, body and spirit.

Malachite: The wide use of cosmetics and beauty aids in all the ancient civilizations is quite extraordinary. Malachite was one of those gems which, when pulverized, produced a lovely green eye shadow. From tombs whose origin preceded those of Egypt, we find cosmetic jars and paint cups containing Malachite. Later on, King Solomon extracted this gem as a copper byproduct from his fabulous mines and became wealthy as a result.

In Egypt, Malachite was used primarily as a protection for children against evil spirits. During the Middle Ages, it was a popular talisman against the Evil Eye, all forms of sorcery and black magic.

Modern folklore suggests that Malachite increases abundance in all areas of life, offering its wearer health, vitality and protection.

Turquoise: Tradition says that Isaac, the son of Abraham, was the first to open the famed Persian Turquoise mines. Although various versions of the bible disagree, some scholars believe that the gem was one of the precious stones that comprises the foundation of the New Jerusalem.

In acient lore, the beautiful blue color of Turquoise represented the atmosphere surrounding the earth, which was regarded as the giver of life and breath. The stone further signified man's origin as a creature of spirit rather than of flesh.

A belief that Turquoise brought good luck was prevalent during the time of Shakespeare. Also, superstitions alluded to the belief that the stone grew pale when its owner took sick and lost its color completely at death. Turquoise would regain its color however, if it was worn by a new and healthy owner. Today, the American Indian reveres Turquoise for its balancing and healing energy. It is said to act as a unifying force between the Spirit of air and the Spirit of the earth.

Amethyst: Amethyst is the most beautiful and valuable form of quartz. The word Amethyst stems from a Greek word meaning "without drunkenness," for in ancient times it was believed that anyone carrying or wearing this stone could not become intoxicated. Perhaps the Greeks were aware of the soothing effect of its rich, purple color, for they believed it had the ability to help control the temperament.

The 7th stone which the sage Iachus gave to Appolonius, Amethyst represented piety and dignity. The early Rosicrucians saw the stone as an emblem of divine sacrifice, since the color was considered a sign of suffering, passion and hope.

The legend of Amethyst is the source of many of the healing qualities which have come to be identified with the stone. The story goes like this. The god Bacchus had been particularly offended one day due to a lack of consideration which he felt he deserved. To appease his anger, he was determined to kill, by means of his tigers, the first person he met. The unfortunate one was Amethyst, a beautiful young maiden who, as fate would have it, crossed his path on her way to worship the goddess Diana at the temple. As the tigers sprang upon her, she pleaded for protection from Diana, who transformed her into a pure, clear stone. Witnessing this miracle and repenting of his crime, Bacchus sought to soothe Amethyst by pouring the juice of the grape over her, bestowing on her a lovely purple hue.

Amethyst is often referred to as the "Bishop's Stone" because a ring set with this gem is still worn today by the Bishops of the Catholic Church, symbolizing their moral victory over worldly passions.

Coral: According to Plato, children who wear coral about the neck will be protected from disease. This interesting custom persisted throughout the Middle Ages. Coral is really the skeleton of a marine animal and as such, it carries with it the special creative vibrations of the sea. Just as the ocean is the life's blood of the land, so too, Coral is said to aid in the circulation of the body and to enrich the blood.

Unlike red and angelskin Coral, black Coral is said to hold in negativity and the limitations that are present in the mind of the wearer. In the past, it was associated with sorcery and was kept in the Shamans' bag. In Tibet, India and other middle eastern countries, black Coral is still considered a sign of bad luck.

Onyx: In ancient times, Onyx was used to guard against witches' spells and evil sorcery. It was reputed to drive away all undesirable thoughts and bad temper. Folklore says that Onyx was considered a stabilizing stone, especially during times of extreme stress because it prevented loss of energy from the body.

In India, another legend states that Onyx was worn around the neck in order to cool the passions of love. It was further believed that the stone encouraged a spirit of separateness and independence between partners.

Amber: Legend says that long ago, pieces of the sun broke off as it set into the ocean. When they cooled, they formed chunks of Amber, "The Gold of the Sea". It is actually the fossilized resin from a species of extinct pine tree.

The Greek name for Amber was a word meaning "electron." This stone has the ability to produce a charge of negative electrons and to attract light particles to it when rubbed. This pyrolectric property, which causes Amber to generate heat quickly and effectively, may be a factor in its medicinal use. Amber is said to be effective in relieving sore throats and minor infections.

Garnet: Throughout the ages, Garnet has always been noted for its deep, rich color. Ancient legends state that Garnet could never be hidden, that even under clothing, its glowing light would shine forth. According to traditional beliefs, Noah used the wine-red variety of Garnet to light the Ark. The stone's ability to reveal that which is hidden may be the reason why Garnet was once thought to illuminate the mind so it could see back to past incarnations.

Peridot: Peridot is a gem variety of olivine, also known as "chrysolite". Highly valued by the ancients, the stones were once considered more valuable than diamonds. In fact, they were actually used as currency to pay tribute to Egyptian rulers. The ancients of that day believed that Peridot could only be found at night, when the stone radiated like the sun. Although it was said to glow, Peridot was never mined at night. Instead, the spot where the light appeared was carefully marked, and the diggers returned the following day to unearth the gems.

Peridot was the only gem set in transparent form by the Romans, who wore it for protection against enchantments, melancholy and illusion. During the Middle Ages, knights wore the stone as a means of gaining foresight and divine inspiration. It was also recommended for those who desired eloquence in speech.

Opal: Known as "The Gem of the Gods," Opal has always had a mystical significance. It is said to aid in psychic vision and to have the power to open the spiritual centers. As a curative stone, Opal was believed to heighten weak emotions and to strengthen the memory.

During the time of Queen Elizabeth, Opal was written "ophal." Some believe the name was derived from the word "opthalmos" meaning, "the eye." Thus, in ancient times, Opal was said to be intimately connected with a belief in the Evil Eye. Over the years, a superstition developed which said the stone caused ill luck if gazed upon. In contrast, another folktale of a later date suggests that looking at Opal is actually good for the eyes.

At one time, this stone was considered the gem of love. Opal could reverse its lucky effects for those who lacked fidelity, however, bestowing unfortunate circumstances upon unfaithful lovers.

The disease process is triggered by the disruption of the flow of prana, or vital energy. Precious and semi precious gemstones have a natural ability to restore the flow of prana that gets continuously disrupted (due to emotional and physical stress) and to connect you to the realm of spirit and subtle energies. Wearing Gemstone Yoga & Chakra Jewelry is an easy way to enhance the vibration around you and promote healing from within. Not to mention bringing out your beauty and embelish your wardrobe with their mysterious charm and luster!
Bring Balance into Your Life with Gemstone Jewelry and Chakra Jewelry

Creation results from the expansion and contraction of the energies in the Universe. Everything emerges from the eternal principles known in Samkhya philosophy as Purusha (pure consciousness) and Prakruti (or Prakriti, original matter). All creation emerges from their interface: from the Cosmic Mind to the elements of nature that form everything, including your body-mind complex. This is easily understood if you remember that you are energy first (a soul) incarnated as matter (your body). It is written in the Baghavad Gita, "Earth, water, fire, wind, ether, consciousness, intellect and ego: thus my Prakruti has been divided into eight parts." This is basically how the Cosmic Prakruti manifests in the individual soul.

Crystals and gemstones harness and harmonize the subtle energies of all the elements --earth, water, fire, wind, ether, consciousness, intellect and ego-- so they can trigger and stimulate your inner power to heal on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. They act by resonance and vibration on all your energy centers (chakras), as well as through the nervous system and subtle channels (nadis) that connect all the energies and tissues of the organism. By wearing Gemstone Yoga and Chakra Jewelry you will feel more balanced and grounded, and more in touch with the inner intelligence of your body.
Sacred Beads and Gemstones Combined in Gemstone Yoga Jewelry

Beads from other natural materials, such as sandalwood, tulsi, rudraksha, lotus seeds, bodhi seeds and rosewood, are also considered sacred beads and have been used in India and the Yoga and Ayurveda traditions for spiritual and healing purposes for thousands of years. This is why we also integrate those into our Sacred Jewelry Designs --especially the Yoga Jewelry Designs.
Custom Gemstone Jewelry, Custom Gemstone Malas and Rosaries

Although all our designs are unique (one-of-a-kind), we can also custom design Gemstone Jewelry for your specific healing or spiritual needs. Your gemstone Malas, also known as Prayer Beads or Japa Beads for prayer, mantra repetition, or meditation can also be custom designed with gemstones and sacred beads according to your spiritual tradition, needs and goals.

The History of Gem Therapy and Planetary Gemmology

The History of Gem Therapy and Planetary Gemmology

Modern science recognises the potencies of gems in their technological uses, such as the use of crystals in watches, computers, and lasers. However, their subtle uses to cure disease, balance human emotions and infuse other potencies to the wearer are not recognised by western science and medicine. Thorough study of this subject has shown that the Vedic uses of gemstones in astrology and medicine have been proven by the experiences of countless people, both in ancient and modern times. The science of planetary gemmology is used as a most effective healing tool within the eastern, or sidereal, system of astrology. Over a billion people throughout Asia and the world take advantage of this system to counteract imbalances throughout their lives, whether they be physical, mental, or spiritual.

In the histories of the Indian (of India), the Greek, Egyptian, as well as the Jewish cultures, gems were valued for their abilities to heal and also to enhance the lives of the wearers. Our Western system of birthstones traces its origin to the Breastplate of the High Priest, also known as the Breastplate of Aaron. In the Bible, Moses gave specific rules governing the "Breastplate of Judgement" which was set with 12 gems. Each gemstone was engraved with a name of one of the tribes of Israel. Through archaeological research and excavations we find that man has always collected gemstones and had some knowledge of their uses and potencies. There is evidence of systematic mining in Egypt over 7,000 years ago, as well as in the Oxus Valley of Afghanistan.

However, no other culture had such extensive knowledge of the use of gems as did the ancient Indians in their scriptures. The Vedas contain the most complete storehouse of knowledge of gems, their description, potencies and prescriptions for effective usage. The instructions on their uses and prescriptions are found especially in the texts of the "Jyotish" and the "Guruda Purana." They give detailed descriptions of the uses of gemstones as remedial measures to counter imbalances in an astrological horoscope by the wearing of gems on the body, as well as the uses of gems in preparing elixirs and medicines to be taken internally. Kings and queens wore gems on their crowns originally for the occult powers they imparted, rather than as a show of personal wealth. Gemstones were used as a basis for directing the subtle forces of nature, to increase the wearer's powers and abilities to achieve desired goals. Such desires included wealth, influence and popularity, preventing physical disease and averting disasters.

Gems were said by the ancient rishis and seers to be able to avert negative influences of planets and to increase positive ones. The colours and vibrations of specific gemstones directly correspond to the colours and vibrations of various planets in our solar system. Everything in the universe is influenced by and sensitive to colour. The degree of influence they have on people is dependent upon the particular colours' emanations and absorption rate. The gems create their effect by both the absorption and reflections of the vibratory rays. They are extremely sensitive and contain radioactive crystals which can increase the cosmic rays received by the planets. When worn as rings or pendants they actually create an electromagnetic field around the person, but just as electricity works differently according to the particular equipment it is used to run, these rays work differently in different bodily constitutions.

Energy is the composition of the elements of nature as vibrational rays and wavelengths. When gemstone therapy is utilised the gems pick up and transmit a specific wavelength to the body. The body in turn transforms these rays into chemicals and elemental particles it can use to better function both on the physical and emotional levels. The different planets and their gemstones will be discussed at length in this section. The gems are incredible repositories of their cosmic powers and their force is always positive. However, care must be taken that the correct gemstones are worn. Gems should be recommended by a qualified vedic astrologer, tantric, or ayurvedic practitioner as their effects are powerful and can cause detriment if incorrectly applied.

The Curative and Spiritual Powers of Gemstones

In the same way as medicines cure a disease by cumulative vibrational qualities, gemstones can counteract afflictions caused by the negative planetary effects. There are also medicines made from gems' ashes (bhasmas) and powders (pisthis) which have been used to cure disease by taking internally. The results have been astounding and referred to as "the ancient editions of modern isotopes".

There is also a method of placing a high-quality gem in a solution of diluted alcohol and placed in darkness for approximately 7 days, which allows the vibratory force of the gem to permeate the alcohol solution. This solution is then used as medicine. The gemstone loses no potency so this medicine may be made again and again with the same gem.

Another process is to place a gem in water in a glass jar in the sunlight. This will allow the water to absorb this vibratory force, helped by the rays of the sun. A qualified ayurvedic doctor can mix different gem waters or tinctures for use by patients. Furthermore, there are hidden potencies of another nature within gemstones. Such potencies may be unlocked by clairvoyants to see into other realms and to increase spiritual growth of the "higher self". In readings by the well-known clairvoyant "Edgar Cayce" he was adamant about the efficacy of gemstones for physical, mental, or spiritual benefits. He also stated that gems will not affect all people the same way and, therefore, a qualified person must make the diagnosis for application of a gem.

The human body is made up of the seven colours of the rainbow. Whenever there is a lacking within the body of any of these colours disease becomes evident. These colours are stored within gemstones in great abundance and are never depleted or used up, even after many years.

GEMSTONE TREATMENTS

Once a person receives a recommendation for wearing a particular gemstone it can be purchased from a dealer of gemstones or a jeweller. It should be noted that the gems must be of natural origin and must not have been treated with heat or irradiation in a laboratory. Such treatments are widely used in the industry to improve the colour or clarity of stones, thus making them more saleable. Although this may make a usually less attractive stone more pleasing to the eye, it effectively negates the stone's inherent energies, rendering it useless for therapeutic applications.

Almost all rubies and sapphires are "cooked", as it is called in the trade, together with most topaz, members of the quartz family, such as amethyst and citrine, spinels, garnets, tourmaline, peridot and a host of other gemstones. This practice has been going on for a long time and the "gem treaters" have become so advanced in their work that it is very difficult to discern. There is no loss in value, indeed the monetary value is generally increased by improving the gemstone's visual qualities.

Natural gems are getting rarer and it's important that the buyer looking for a "healing gemstone" either be an expert gemologist, or know the person they are buying from, including their qualifications to examine gems for treatment.

"Synthetic gems" (man-made under laboratory- controlled conditions) are useless for gem therapy Synthetic or natural gems that have been heat-treated may have some therapeutic value in regards to colour therapy, but just as much benefit could be obtained by wearing coloured glass, so why spend money on a gemstone for this purpose? Coloured lights and clothing would be just as effective from a viewpoint of colour therapy Gemstone therapy has power and influence over the body and mind far beyond this.

I have been in and around this business all my life and, as a qualified gemologist, know that even most jewellers and dealers cannot easily tell the difference. In actuality most really don't care either way, as they look at gems as a business for adornment or fashion, not as tools to effect healing. In our family we go to great lengths to obtain natural, untreated gemstones and must travel the globe in search of them.

Another treatment which is used, mainly with emeralds, is oiling the stones. Each gemstone species has what we call in gemological terms R.I., or refractive index. This is a scale used in an instrument called a "refractometer" which measures the angles at which light bends in various gemstones. In a gem which generally has many fractures or other imperfections (such as emeralds do), if an oil can be used to "fill" the fissures which has the same refractive index as the gemstone itself, the imperfections become almost invisible. When light hits the imperfections in the gem it bends at another angle, but if the cracks are filled with an oil (such as cedar oil or balsa oil which have almost the same refractive index as emerald), then the light will not change its course and the crack will not be seen. Eventually this oil seeps out of the stone and the stone will show the imperfections.

There are also less sophisticated treatments such as wax or plastic impregnation. These are to improve the appearance of the gemstone, generally used with stones cut in the domed or "cabachon" style, such as coral and turquoise.

As you can see it is important to purchase from a reputable person, as well as get the recommendation from a knowledgeable practitioner. I have had the experience that many astrologers recommend gems to clients, and also obtain them, yet do not have the gemological knowledge or experience to know how to examine the stone. As a result they may, inadvertently, cheat their own clients, as they are being cheated by unknowledgeable or unprincipled dealers.

I have personally had the unenviable position of having to inform a person that their gem is not what its supposed to be when brought to me for gemological evaluation. Many times I've seen people who have bought gems in "source" countries and, not only was the stone either treated or a completely different gem than was purported, but it was of a quality so poor that it would cause harmful effects.

Gems are extremely powerful, as I've repeatedly stated and low quality stones can cause an opposite effect to that desired. Gemstones should always be "beautiful". This is their prime attribute. If a stone looks unattractive you can be sure it's not suitable for therapeutic purposes. If you cannot afford the high price of a good quality ruby, then it is much better to get a good quality rubellite (red tourmaline) or red garnet. However, the size would need to be somewhat larger in the substitute stones to compensate. The same goes for all gems. Choose fine quality in a substitute gemstone (generally referred to as "semi-precious") rather than a low quality primary gemstone.

THE LEGEND OF VALA

Sri Suta Goswami said: I shall now expound the science of gemology. Long ago, in ancient times, there lived a great demon name Vala. Overpowering the King of Heaven, Indra, Vala became the tyrannical ruler of the entire universe. By deceit, however, the oppressed demigods tricked Vala into acting as the sacrificial animal in a ritual performance. But once Vala was tied to the sacrificial stake, the demigods suddenly abandoned their mock sacrifice, and immediately killed the powerful demon. In fact, for the benefit of the demigods and the universe, Vala had allowed himself to be slain.

The demigods then severed his various limbs which transformed into the creative seeds of precious gems. As the potent body of Vala was dismembered, a tumultuous roar sounded through the celestial regions, and all the deities, demons, mystics, and serpent-gods anxiously rushed to gather up the gem seeds. The demigods clamored to secure the gem seeds, but the shock waves generated by their celestial chariots pushed some of the mystical essences down into the earthly sphere.
Some of these seeds fell into rivers, some into the oceans, and some into the forests and mountains. There they germinated as mother lodes of the various gems, each one imbued with its own intrinsic potency.
All these gems posses talismanic powers. The fine, auspicious stones can counteract poison, snake venom, diseases, and other dangers. Poor quality, inauspicious gems act in the opposite manner.

Ruby, emerald, blue sapphire, cat's eye, yellow sapphire, diamond, pearl, hessonite, coral, bloodstone, quartz, jade, and red garnet are the foremost species of gems, and they should be selected only under the expert guidance of a learned gemologist.

The value of a gemstone is established by reference to the authoritative gemological texts. Quality is analyzed according to weight, cut, color, and clarity. --- Sri Garuda Puranam: 68 a

Birthstones: choosing a gem for you

Most gem scholars agree that the tradition of birthstones arose from the Breastplate of Aaron: a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel and also corresponded with the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve months of the year.

Because ancient people did not always classify gemstones by mineral species like we do, there is some debate about which gemstones were set in the breastplate and why. Because of this, different cultures around the world have developed different birth stone lists. The modern day list that you know is only the most recent list: some older lists still exist. Some also argue that the proper way to assign gemstones is according to astrological sign and not month. We think it is more fun to choose the gemstone that speaks to you from all the possibilities. Of course it is hard to keep track of all the lists. Enter the Gem-o-Matic! Select your birthdate or other significant date or anniversary and the Gem-o-Matic will give you the list of all the birthstones that correspond to that date!
